In 1971 I
was a cadet commander at Paine Field Composite Squadron,
Civil Air Patrol. In addition to serving as the squadron
cadet commander, I also served as the squadron's emergency
services team cadet commander. I participated in numerous
searches for downed aircraft as well as practice searches.
In
December of 1971 I was awarded the Paine Field Chapter WPA
scholarship in the amount of $200. Believe it or not, I was
actually able to solo a Cessna 150 with some change left
over! I remember writing on my application that I had taken
a ride in a Citabria with a fellow cadet and knew from that
moment on that I wanted to be a professional pilot.
I
remember the awards banquet where I received the
scholarship. As he was handing me the scholarship envelope,
Col. Young told me to always remember that someone was
helping me achieve my dream, and that whenever possible I
should do the same for someone else. Since then I have
served and chaired on many scholarship committees, conducted
fundraisers, and donated my time, money, and aircraft to
help others pursue their dreams of becoming pilots.
I'm happy
to hear that your chapter is offering another scholarship.
Your assistance in helping me with my career is warmly
appreciated and will never be forgotten.
